Activity
From research to marketing of pharmaceuticals
In every step of the 6 stages of the process from research and development to manufacturing and marketing of pharmaceuticals, we exploit all our technology and intelligence.

Drug discovery research
Studying genes, proteins or other substances at the molecular level, we identify potential avenues that may lead to the development of new drugs based on new mechanisms.
Screening and Optimization
Using synthetic chemistry and biotechnology, we explore the "seeds" with hidden potential from diverse perspectives.
Pre-clinical Research
Evaluating the "seeds" of our research from every perspective from their effectiveness to safety as a medicinal drug, we create valuable new pharmaceuticals.
Clinical Development
At our development centers located in Japan, Europe, America and Asia, we undertake clinical quality assurance to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pharmaceuticals in accordance with the standards of each country.
Production / Quality Assurance
In order to ensure the shipping of products that meet global quality standards, our five plants in Japan boast the latest in manufacturing technology and equipment and employ a quality assurance system that rigorously checks every step from the drug substance to the drug products.
MR Activities
Our 1,400 medical representatives in 65 sales offices around Japan provide high-quality information that benefits both patients and everyone involved in medical care. In addition, overseas marketing networks in Asia, Europe and America are also steadily expanding.
Putting Our Overseas Networks to Work
The initial aim of our overseas business strategy is to fully exploit the core antibody business of Kyowa Hakko Kirin. This involves moving forward with the global standardization of our enhanced antibody activity technologies, the acquisition of new antibodies and antigens through alliances and other means, and the early acquisition of primary patent rights. In addition, we will establish a long-term profit base in the key business area of Asia by enhancing our product lineup and undertaking the strategic integration of business operations in China. We are also formulating strategies to create sales channels in Europe and America that will ensure our sales network reaches every corner of the world.
Business Outline
Our Products
Here are some of the main products of Kyowa Hakko Kirin - all produced using cutting-edge manufacturing technology and equipment and under our strict quality assurance system and in full compliance with global standards.
GRAN®

GRAN® is a protein produced by genetic recombination technology. It works to selectively increase the count of a type of white cell called neurotrophil, as well as increase their functional efficacy. This enables a quick recovery from neutropenia occurring as a result of cancer chemotherapy and reduces the risk of infection, allowing for more effective chemotherapy. It also acts to relieve congenital neutropenia or neutropenia occurring after hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (such as bone-marrow transplants). In 2000 it received additional approval for application to PBSCT (peripheral blood stem cell transfusion) mobilization.
NESP®

NESP® is a new anti-anemia agent that attaches new sugar chains through partial modification of the amino acid sequence of human erythropoietin (EPO). In comparison to previous erythropoietin preparations, it exhibits a sustained increase of erythrocytes. As such, it has the vital characteristic of correcting anemia with smaller doses than had been required previously.
ESPO®

ESPO® is a glycoprotein, human erythropoietin, produced by using the technology of genetic recombination. Its specific pharmacological effect of increasing erythrocytes allows it to act as an anemia-relieving treatment for dialysis patients. In 1995 it was further adapted to the treatment of anemia found in premature infants, renal anemia during CAPD (continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis) and before dialysis treatment, as well as for autologous blood transfusion.
CONIEL®

CONIEL® is the nation's first long-acting calcium antagonist (generic name hydrochloride benidipine) in Japan and effective against both hypertension and angina pectoris. It has been demonstrated that this drug has a high affinity for the vascular smooth muscle cell membrane and that its antihypertensive and other pharmacological effects are sustained over a long period with no correlation with blood concentrations of the drug.
REGPARA®

REGPARA® is a new class of agent for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism. REGPARA® acts on parathyroid calcium receptor directly and suppresses parathyroid hormone secretion, while simultaneously lowering serum calcium and phosphorus levels.
ALLELOCK® / Patanol®

ALLELOCK® is a medicine for patients with all types of allergies (generic name olopatadine hydrochloride). It exhibits potent and selective antihistamine activity, and suppresses various symptoms of allergies by widely inhibiting the factors involved in allergic reactions. It relieves the three major symptoms of pollinosis or allergic rhinitis (sneezing, nasal discharge and congestion), as well as itching associated with chronic urticaria and skin diseases.
The active ingredient of the antiallergic eye drops Patanol® is the same olopatadine hydrochloride. The product was first developed, manufactured and sold overseas by the Alcon Group. It is approved for sale in over eighty countries worldwide including Japan.
DEPAKENE® / TOPINA®

DEPAKENE® is an antiepileptic agent with sodium valproate as its active ingredient that has proved to be highly effective administered alone. It comes in various dosage forms to meet different clinical needs. In addition to treating various types of epilepsy and behavioral or personality disorders resulting from epilepsy, it is also used to treat mania and manic depression.
TOPINA® is an antiepileptic agent whose active ingredient is topiramate. Administered in combination with other medicines, it is effective against epilepsy with partial seizures (including secondary generalized seizures), against which other treatments have not yet been shown to be fully effective. It is highly effective in enhancing the quality of life of intractable epilepsy patients.
